Heroes2 Visits Masarang Foundation Part 2

Day 2: Nothing but sweetness

The highlight of the second day was the visit to Masarang Foundation's sugar factory, where sugar sap is boiled in huge metal pans and cooked to a caramel-like paste in order to make palm sugar.

Even more impressive was the factory's environmental friendly operations. It uses excess geothermal fuel from Pertamina (a state-owned energy company), saving 200,000 trees per year that would otherwise have been needed to cook the sugar palm sap. The factory also produces zero waste. For example, the water that is evaporated in the boiling process is filtered by the roots of the sugar palm to become drinking water.
